Veronica longifolia (Longleaf Speedwell) growing on my nature strip.

Veronica longifolia is a clump-forming, upright perennial native to Europe and Western Asia. From late summer through to autumn, densely packed spikes of tiny, tubular, purplish-blue flowers appear. Flowers spikes can be up to 25cm in length. This is an easy to grow plant if given the correct conditions. Grow in full sun in moist well drained soil. Height approx 1m.

Excellent cut flower offering long vase life (7-14 days) and adding vertical interest to bouquets and arrangements. To use as a cut flower, harvest stems when spikes are about one-third open, ensuring they are cut all the way to the ground for reblooming.

I grew my plant from seeds purchased from England. These are easy to grow plants from

seeds. Seeds must have a cold spell to break dormancy (my seeds are stored in the fridge). If you don't live in a cold enough area, place seeds in the fridge in a water tight container for 6 weeks before sowing. Sow seeds in pots as seeds are very small during autumn. I surface sow my seeds. Water and keep damp but not wet. Seeds will germinate when temperatures are around 20C. I grew my seedlings in the pot for their first year and transplanted them out the following spring.
