This is must have for your autumn garden. Tall with masses of mauve flowers similar to those of the perennial aster. I grow mine not far from my Jerusalem artichoke as they make a stunning combination when in flower.
A native American wildflower, it produces masses of small daisy-like mauve flowers (2cm) during late summer and autumn. Flowers appear on long strong sturdy stems. This rhizomatous perennial is very easy to grow. It prefers average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun. Cut foliage back in winter. forms Height 1.2m. The bees and butterflies love this plant.
Excellent cut flowers plus it is a robust bloomer. Long vase life.
These plants are very easy to grow from seed. Seeds must have a cold spell to break dormancy. If you don't live in a cold enough area, place seeds in the fridge in a water tight container for 6 weeks before sowing. Sow seeds on the surface of the soil and sprinkle with a fine layer of soil. Light helps with germination. Water and keep damp but not wet. Seeds will germinate when temperatures are around 20C. Grow plant to around 10cm, harden off and transplant into the garden.
Genus name honors James Bolton (1735-1799), English botanist.
