Verbascum hybridum 'Southern Charm' is a desirable ornamental Mullein. It is a short-lived perennial with abundant, graceful spikes smothered with vintage toned flowers. I leave at least one spike of flowers go to seed and sprinkle them at the base of the plant. Another option is to remove flower spikes before seeds set. This not only encourages more flowers but also tricks the plant to act more like a perennial. Plants grown from seed will flower in the first year. This will occur around 90 to 120 days. Established plants flower from late spring through to late summer.
Grow this plant in full sun. It is not fussy about soil type just so long as it is well drained. Plants are susceptible to root rot if overwatered. My plants are well mulched during summer. In flower this plant will be around 1.2 high however plants grown in rich fertile should get taller and may require staking. Mine is growing next to my large species Siberian iris which supports it.
Excellent cut flower but sadly it only has a vase life of around 3 days. Cut when 50–70% of the flowers on the spike have opened.
Sow seeds during autumn, place seeds on top of the soil and don't cover them as they need light to germinate. Keep seeds damp but not wet. Seeds will germinate when temperatures are around 20C. Grow plants to around 10cm in height, harden off and plant out.
