Sanguisorba officinalis 'Tanna' (Great Burnet)

Sanguisorba officinalis 'Tanna' growing on my nature strip.

This is a compact, clump-forming perennial known for its charming deep ruby-red or maroon, button-like bottlebrush flowers, blooming from summer to autumn. Plants form low mounds of blue-green, crimped leaves each finely divided into oblong leaflets. Height 60cm.

Excellent cut flower offering a long vase life and unique vertical interest.

Beneficial bees and insects love the flowers.

Grow Sanguisorba in full sun to light shade in moderately fertile, to humus rich, well drained soil – it is quite obliging and adaptable and can even cope in heavy soils. Cut back dead stems to ground level anytime from autumn to early spring before growth begins.

Sow seeds during autumn or winter as they need cold conditions (cold stratification) for around 6 weeks. I recommend sowing seeds into pots due to the small size of the seeds. Sprinkle seeds on top of the soil and water. Keep seeds damp but not wet. Seeds will germinate when temperatures are around 20cm. Be patient as seeds will germinate over a period of time. Grow plants to around 10cm in height, harden off and plant out.
