A bushy perennial to 90cm tall when in flower. During spring and early summer 70cm tall wands carry large deep mauve-blue flowers each with beautiful white lip markings. Lyre-shaped or ovate leaves to 30cm long. It is very cold and shade tolerant which makes it useful under trees etc but also grows in full sun. It is not tolerant to humidity or coastal semi tropical areas. This salvia prefers moist but well drained soil. Once finished flowering remove stems to prevent self seeding. During autumn remove old leaves.
Excellent cut flower with a long vase life. Use a filler flower.
Seeds must be fresh, so autumn sowing only. This also allows for cold stratification. Sow seeds in pots but don't cover with soil as seeds need light to germinate. Water and keep damp. Seeds will germinate when temperatures are around 20C. Grow on in pots until plants are around 10cm high. Harden off and transplant into the garden.
