Obedient plant, also known as false dragonhead, is a fast-growing perennial that is easy to grow. It prefers full sun and well drained soil that is on the acidic side. Stunning pink flowers appear in summer and continue to autumn. . Flowers open from the bottom of the stalk and work upwards. Plants spread by seeds and rhizomes. I then mine out during my autumn tidy up. Height 1.5m.
Excellent cut flower offering a long vase life and unique vertical interest. Harvest flower when the lower blooms open but upper buds are just beginning. Immediately place stems into cool water to maximize vase life. Vase life 7 days plus.
Sow seeds during autumn or winter as they need cold conditions (cold stratification) for around 6 weeks. Seeds can be placed in a air tight container in the fridge for 6 weeks before sowing if you are in a warmer area. I recommend sowing seeds into pots but you can direct sow these seeds. Place seeds on top of the soil and water and gently cover with soil. Keep seeds damp but not wet. Seeds will germinate when temperatures are around 20cm. Grow plants to around 10cm in height, harden off and plant out.
