Francoa sonchifolia is a delightful perennial from Chile. Spikes of soft pink flowers appear at the start of summer and continue until the start of autumn. Francoa is an evergreen with mounds of crinkled foliage that changes to red during winter. Grows best in mild climates (frost tolerant) in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Ideal for dry shade gardens and woodland gardens. Francoa is a relatively low-maintenance only requiring the removal of old, damaged foliage and spent flower stalks when necessary. Height to 90cm when in flower.

Excellent cut flower offering a long vase life and unique vertical interest.

Sow seeds during autumn or winter as they need cold conditions (cold stratification) for around 6 weeks. Seeds can be placed in a air tight container in the fridge for 6 weeks before sowing if you are in a warmer area. I recommend sowing seeds into pots. Place seeds on top of the soil and water. Seeds need light to germinate. Keep seeds damp but not wet. Seeds will germinate when temperatures are around 20cm. Grow plants to around 10cm in height, harden off and plant out.
