This is such a stunning plant when in flower. The flowers are large and an intense shade of mauve. Aster stracheyi is a rare low growing creeping deciduous perennial. Attracts bees, beneficial insects, birds and butterflies making it an excellent addition to pollinator gardens.
Grows in full sun in average, gritty, rocky and well-drained soil. Let the plant dry out between waterings. Mine is growing on the edge of a rock edging where it gets lots of warmth and excellent drainage. It also allows for the flowers to stand out. Frost hardy.
It is named for Lt. Richard Strachey, 19th century official with the Indian Civil Service and plant collector in Tibet.
Sow seeds in pots as they are small during autumn as they need a cold spell to break dormancy. Place seeds on top of potting mix and water. Keep damp but not wet. Seeds will germinate during spring when the temperature warms up. Be patient as seeds can take their time to germinate. Grow plants to a good size around 15cm. Harden off and transplant into the garden.
