White Chocolate Lace Flower ('Dara' Daucus carota)

This plant self seeded in a different section of my garden to where I grow my Chocolate Lace Flower ('Dara' Daucus carota). This is its first year of flowering and producing seeds. So, I have no idea what the flowers will be like from these seeds. But I am hoping that by sending these seeds out into the world, we will be able to develop a new white variety. If you do purchase these seeds, please keep me posted on how they develop. I have also sown these seeds and will post photos of their flowers next season.

This is an annual plant carrying tall lacy white umbels with the slightest tint of pink. These flowers will bring the pollinating insects to your garden. Plants prefers full sun to a little light shade and well drained soil. Height to 1.5m.

Pick flowers when more than half of the little flowers have opened. Vase life is normally 4-5 days. To harvest, cut early in the morning and cut very low at the base, right above the rosette of leaves. This will ensure that the plant will keep producing new stems right at the bottom of the plant. It is recommended you do a "wiggle" test to check the sturdiness of the stem. Strip most of the leaves and plunge into a bucket of cold water. It is important that the water level is almost to the flower heads. Let them condition for at least 12 hours if not more.

To get the best results, you should select blooms that are just at their peak or even just before full bloom. Hang flowers upside down in a dry, dark and warm place. It will take around 2 to 3 weeks for the flowers to dry.

It is important to sow fresh seeds. These are from this year's harvest. I prefer to sow my seeds during autumn by scattering them direct in the garden. Plants sown at this time will develop strong stems. Seeds can also be sown in pots but be careful as these plants have a taproot and do not like being disturbed. Lightly cover seeds with potting mix, keep damp but not wet. Seeds germinate at approx 20C. Grow seedlings to approx 10cm, then transfer into the garden. Flowers will ready to harvest between 65 and 100 days,
