A bulbous perennial from the Liliaceae (lily family). It is native to the Mediterranean area. Cuban lilies flower in late winter to early spring. They push up a cone shape flower head supported on a very thick flower stem. The flower head is made up of 50 or more small star shaped flowers. These flowers can be either dark blue, pale blue or white. Seeds for sale are for the blue variety. Foliage is dark green and strappy. Cuban lilies requires a full sun to part shade position in the garden that has moist, well-drained and humus rich soil. Height 25cm.
The Cuban lily flower is ideal as a cut flower with a vase life of up to 3 weeks. Harvest when flower heads are well-developed. They are self-supporting and robust, making them easy to arrange.
Seeds must be fresh, so autumn sowing only. This also allows for cold stratification. Sow seeds in pots or direct and cover lightly with soil. Water and keep damp. Seeds will germinate when temperatures are around 20C. Grow on in pots until plants are around 10cm high. Harden off and transplant into the garden. Watch for snails and slugs.
Also known as Peruvian Squill, Peruvian Lily and Hyacinth of Peru.
