Scabiosa drakensbergensis

This is a rare giant from the Mountains of South Africa. It is a leafy evergreen perennial which is distinguished by its lush, wide leaves. A long succession of ivory white flowers are produced during summer. Its ability to display buds, flowers, and seeds simultaneously adds a dynamic visual interest to the garden. Flowers are popular with insects, particularly with bees and butterflies. Grow in full sun, although it can tolerate some shade for part of the day. Soil must be well drained with plenty of compost. Mulch well, and water regularly. Height 1.5m. Plants can flower in their first year.

Excellent cut flower. Cut when the blooms are in the "button" stage up to one-third open to maximize vase life. Vase life up to 10 days.

I grew my plant from seeds purchased from England. These are easy to grow plants from seeds. Seeds must have a cold spell to break dormancy. If you don't live in a cold enough area, place seeds in the fridge in a water tight container for 6 weeks before sowing. Sow seeds just below the surface and cover with potting mix. You can also direct sow your seeds. Water and keep damp but not wet. Seeds will germinate when temperatures are around 20C. I grew my seedlings in the pot for their first year and transplanted them out the following spring.
