A short-lived, clump-forming herbaceous perennial with feathery divided mid-green leaves. Throughout summer and early autumn it produces pincushion-shaped flowers that rise on thin stems above the foliage. These are darkest burgundy, with almost black centres and white stamens.
Scabiosa atropurpurea grows up to 1m in height. 'Black Knight' seems to stay at around 60cm in height. It is an open an airy plant. I like to grow it in more natural gardens like my prairie style footpath garden. Its colour and texture work perfectly with grasses.
These are excellent cut and dried flowers. The seed pods also add interest to floral arrangements. Harvest when flowers are in the "button stage" or just starting to open, as they'll continue to open in the vase.
It is important to note that I remove the outer casings of my seeds. Most sellers do not this. As a result you usually end up purchasing mainly empty casings.
Seeds are sown in either autumn or spring. They can be direct sown or into pots. Sow on the surface and barely cover with 3mm of mix or grit, as they need light to germinate. Water and keep damp but not wet. Seeds will germinate with temperatures are around 20C. If grown in pots. grow to the plant is 10cm in height, harden off and transplant into the garden.
