These are some of the most stunning flowers. Late Spring through Summer stunning upright spikes appear carrying cylindrical pea-style flowers, up to 100 individual buds on each stem. Excellent cut flowers that make your arrangements pop.
These short lived perennials are very easy to grow plants. They prefer full sun and are not fussy about soil type just make sure it is well draining. Not only ornamental, as a legume, Lupins improve the soil by fixing nitrogen. They will self seed so will will always have them to enjoy. Plants grow to 1.2m when in flower.
The herbaceous lupin Lupinus polyphyllus was brought by David Douglas from North America to Great Britain in the 1820s. Almost a century later, George Russell, a horticulturist from York in the United Kingdom started to breed the Russell hybrids.
Sow seeds in autumn as the seeds need to the cold to break their dormancy. Keep damp but not wet. If you sow your seeds into a pot make you plant out when the plant is no more than 10cm in height as lupins have a long tap root and don't like being transplanted. Seeds will germinate in a few weeks.
