This is a compact rhizomatous evergreen perennial to 20cm tall (40cm in flower), with finely hairy, ovate, evergreen leaves and loose racemes of vivid blue flowers 7mm wide in spring. This charming plant is a native of Turkish woodlands. Even though it can handle sunny positions I think it looks best in more shady positions. I have mine growing in my frog pond garden which features woodland plants as it is located under a large tree and surrounded by hedges. The mass of blue flowers ready pop against the darker background of woodland settings. Omphalodes cappadocica ‘Cherry Ingram’ is a spreading plant and will self seed. I recommend once established deadhead after flowering to keep it under control. Due to its ability to form dense clumps, it is an excellent weed suppressant and looks stunning planted on mass.
It is best to direct sow these seeds in autumn as the seeds require a cold spell to break their dormancy. Keep damp but not wet. Seeds will germinate when the soil warms up in spring. Keep protected from snails and slugs until established. Be patient as the seeds can take longer to germinate.
