Ixias are a hardy corm perennial that is well suited to the warmer climates. They have fine grassy foliage and masses of starry brightly coloured flowers with even brighter markings on tall arching stems. Their flowers come in a range of colours such as white, orange, red, purple / mauve and yellow blooms which have a dark center. Ixia flower late in Spring into early Summer. This late flowering season bridges the gap between the Spring flowering bulbs and the Summer flowering perennials. Water well in Spring but allow to dry off after flowering.
Plant corms in clusters of three. Grow these plants in full sun in well draining soil. Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering to feed next season’s blooms, and leave bulbs in the ground to naturalise. Height to 70cm when in flower.
Ixia make great cut flowers courtesy of their tall strong stems. The blooms will last up to two weeks in a vase.
Seeds must be fresh, so autumn sowing only. This also allows for cold stratification. Sow seeds in pots and cover lightly with soil as seeds need light to germinate. Water and keep damp. Seeds will germinate when temperatures are around 20C. Grow on in pots until plants are around 10cm high. Grown in pots until corm have formed. You can continue to grow plants in pots or transplant into the garden.
Also known as Corn Lilies or Wand Flowers.
