Eryngium planum - Sea Holly is an ornamental perennial native to Europe. It is a good blue variety forming a rounded mound of foliage. The metallic blue flowers start appearing from mid-summer until the end of autumn. The plant itself reaches a height of 30cm but with the flowers its height is around 90cm. It requires full sun and free-draining soil. You can leave the flowers to dry for winter interest or remove them. Drought and frost tolerant once established. Being drought tolerant once established it is ideal for dry gardens.

Excellent cut flower and dried with a long vase life. The blue colouring lasts for months in dried arrangements.

Seeds must be fresh, so autumn sowing only. This also allows for cold stratification. Sow seeds in pots and cover lightly with soil as seeds need light to germinate. Water and keep damp. Seeds will germinate when temperatures are around 20C. Grow on in pots until plants are around 10cm high. Harden off and transplant into the garden. Don't let plants get to big before transplanting as they have tap roots. Seeds will germinate over a period of time so be patient and don't toss the soil away too early.
