Papaver rhoeas - Flanders Poppy or Corn Poppy

The Flanders Poppy is a symbol of remembrance, inspired by the red fields of poppies that bloomed on the battlefields of France during World War I. For this reason I sow my seeds on ANZAC Day for flowers on Remembrance Day.

Papaver rhoeas is an annual poppy that grows to 60cm in height. Flowers are an eye catching bright red that are up to 10cm in size. Grow this poppy in full sun in well drained soil.

To use them as cut flowers, harvest buds just as they split open, then immediately sear the stem ends in boiling water or with a flame for 10-15 seconds to seal in sap and extend their short vase life, ensuring fresh water daily for best results.

Seeds from this flower can be harvested for use in cooking.

Sow seeds direct during autumn and winter. Seeds need light to germinate, so sprinkle them on top of the soil and water. Keep damp but not wet.
