Valeriana officinalis is a perennial growing to 1.5m in height with clusters of fragrant leaves and pale pink or white flowers in summer. This plant prefers full sun and most soil types so long as they are moist but well drained. Frost tolerant. It is stunning mass planted at the back of the garden.
Valerian promotes phosphorus activity and attracts earthworms. It will also bring in the beneficial insects especially hoverflies.

Valeriana officinalis is a medicinal herb with a long history of traditional use. An essential oil from the leaves and root is used as a flavouring in ice cream, baked goods, condiments etc.
Excellent cut flower with a long vase life.
