Ox-eye daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare)

This plant is the backbone to my gardens. The white flowers breaks up the different colours plus it gives the garden it charm and whimsy.

Ox-eye daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare) is part of the daisy family (Asteraceae). It is a perennial herb from Europe that spreads mainly by seed but also has shallow creeping roots called rhizomes. This plant is the backbone of my meadow garden. The white daisy flower swaying in the breeze gives the meadow garden its charm and whimsy. Growing to 90cm tall in clumps of dark green spoon-shaped basal leaves to 10cm long and shorter stem leaves. Solitary white, daisy-like flowerheads with yellow disk florets, are produced in late spring and early summer above the foliage.

This is a very tough and easy to grow plant. It tolerates full sun and temperatures down to -10C. Grow in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade; plants may need support.

This daisy is known for attracting bees, beneficial insects, birds, butterflies/moths and other pollinators.

Excellent cut flower.

It needs to be noted that this plant can become weedy but it is easy manage with dead heading and removing unwanted plants and dead heading to prevent seeds forming.

Culinary note: The young leaves, flowers and flower buds are edible.
