July - Botanical Library - Snail Mail

Updated: Jun 29

This month's feature plant is Astrantia (Burgundy) - Masterworts / Hattie's Pincushion

This herbaceous perennial bears papery pincushion-like flowers in late spring through to autumn. The flowers are carried in upright sprays on wiry, branched stems above a mound of deeply cut leaves. Astrantias come in shades of greenish-white, pinks and maroons.

Astrantias are perfect for woodland and shade gardens. They love damp conditions.

Astrantia are excellent cut and dried flowers.

This month includes 10 open pollinated seeds.

It is time to take a break from the screen, learn a new skill and get back to nature.

Each month will feature a plant that I have growing in my garden in Tasmania.

You will receive:

  • A letter from me.

  • Seeds for that month's plant. These are seeds from my garden.

  • A card with a photo I have taken of the plant on the front, inside are my botanical notes about the plant including information on how to grow your seeds and space for you to make notes. File this away and watch your botanical library grow each month.

  • Horticultural support, email me if you have any questions regarding that month's feature plant.
