Astrantia is a genus of 8 or 9 species in the carrot family (Apiaceae). This herbaceous perennial bears papery pincushion-like flowers in late spring through to autumn. The flowers are carried in upright sprays on wiry, branched stems above a mound of deeply cut leaves. Astrantias come in shades of greenish-white, pinks and maroons. Remove flowers stems after flowering to encourage more flowers. Plants grow in mounded clumps up to 50cm high and spread by stolons.

Astrantias are easy to grow but you must have the correct conditions. Mine are grown in damp soil that receives morning sun.
It is important that these plants do not
dry out nor do they stay waterlogged. These plants prefer organically rich soil. Astrantias are frost hardy.
Astrantias are perfect for woodland and shade gardens. Grow plants at the front of the garden to be enjoyed and crowded by other plants. Keep plants well mulched. Plants will self seed.
Excellent cut and dried flowers with a vase life of up to 2 weeks. Note Astrantias are ethylene sensitive. Cut stems in early morning or late evening, ideally when the bracts are fully open.
Sow Astrantia seeds during autumn or winter as they need a cold, moist period (cold stratification) for around 8 weeks. Sow on the surface of potting mix and barely cover, as they need light to germinate. Keep moist but not wet. Seeds will germinate at around 15-20C. This normally takes 3-6 weeks for the seeds to emerge. Grow on to around 10cm and plant out.
