I grow this plants mainly for its flowers. They add charm and whimsy to my herb garden. Flowering late summer to early autumn it brings a freshness to the garden. Seed heads also add interest. I have growing this plant in this area for many years and I haven't found it to be aggressive.
These are hardy and easy to grow plants. They prefer full sun and most soil types so long as it is well draining.
Allium tuberosum is a perennial plant with strappy flat leaves that grow in clumps. Flowers and leaves of garlic chives can be eaten. It has a strong flavour of garlic and can be used to season cream cheese, butter, eggs, potatoes and other vegetables. Sprinkle into salads, soups, sauces and dressings. Goes well with most meat and fish dishes. Add the chopped leaves just before serving, as the leaves lose flavor and become stringy if overcooked.
Height 60cm.
Excellent cut flowers.
Chives can be grown year-round in most climates. Avoid planting in extremely hot or cold weather which can affect germination and growth. Sow seeds on the surface of the soil and sprinkle with a fine layer of soil. Water and keep damp but not wet. Seeds will germinate when temperatures are around 20C. Grow plant to around 10cm, harden off and transplant into the garden.
